Fourteen intermediate to elite level power lifters were studied using 3 months of an otherwise ad lib (as much as you want) low carb diet consisting of less than 50 gms per day compared to 3 months of their usual diet (fully ad lib) which was >250gm/day of carbs.  During the three months of low carb they lost over 7lbs of body mass and almost 5 lbs of lean mass compared to the usual diet.  However, they did not suffer any loss of strength or performance.

For all of us not power lifting, we can still benefit from this study.  We probably want to stay strong and weigh less too.  We want practical strength to be able to pick up the bag of dog food, dig a hole for planting a shrub, or even carrying our kids out of burning house.
