How to Save Your Life from a Medical Algorithm

Rich Joseph, in this opinion piece in the NY Times, writes about famed Dr. Lown’s experiences as a patient himself.  Having written “The Lost Art of Healing” some 20 years prior to his hospitalization, it became apparent that his hospital staff hadn’t read it.  He fell victim to the “hospital’s conveyor belt.”

“Each day, one person on the medical team would say one thing in the morning, and by the afternoon the plan had changed…. I always was the last to know what exactly was going on, and my opinion hardly mattered.”
