Healthcare Is A Business Not A Right
Here is one of the best descriptions of the visceral reaction most of us have when discussing healthcare that may be too expensive to obtain. We can more easily handle fellow humans going hungry, unable to buy food, than deny them an $80,000 per year medication that might extend their life a few months.
Whenever there is a limited resource someone will be in the position to decide how to distribute the resource. In healthcare, we could allow our government, insurance companies, or the individual patient to make that decision. With DPC, I advocate for the patient to be in control of their own healthcare choices. Does that mean patients will always be able to afford every option? Of course not, but they can’t do that now either. However, when patients control healthcare decision making they force the prices to be lower and more accessible. Therefore, they have more options within their reach.
